TURNS OUT, WE WAS THE right word, after all. At Destiny’s insistence, there were four passengers in Trevor’s SUV when we left less than an hour later. Trevor at the wheel, me riding shotgun (as was my right), and the two new best furry buds in the back seat.

As anxious as Destiny was to go to the pet store, I put my foot down. There was one place we desperately needed to go first. My mothers. I’d already called ahead, and she was waiting for us.

There was a huge reason why that visit was the most important one on our daily task list. We had no guarantee that the shelter would allow us to adopt Jesse, and this might be our one shot at getting her some magical healing for that leg of hers.

Doctors could only do so much with the tools they had at hand. Mom could do more. Lots more.

It turned out that Mom being closer to Oak Hill than to Wind’s Crossing was a good thing. Not only did that put us closer to a much bigger and better stocked pet store, but it also gave me time to do a little work on the investigation. Trevor being the one at the wheel helped on that last one.

I’d given up on trying to locate Mrs. Klein. Well, in a way, anyway. But her husband had said she was with her mother. And her mother was much easier to trace and track down contact information for. I hoped a phone call would work, because it would take over an hour’s drive time for an in-person visit.

Time was a premium at the moment. I was feeling the stress of everything weighing heavily on me. Trevor and I had a lot of irons in the fire right now. Important irons. His journey into witchcraft, Patty’s investigation, the Commissioner’s hearing coming up, and now dealing with poor Jesse.

Good thing I was a powerful witch with a team behind me, huh?

I hadn’t really expected Mrs. Jade (Glenda’s mother) to answer at her house’s landline. After all, she and her daughter were supposedly on a trip, weren’t they?

As it turned out, no. They weren’t.

“No, Glenda isn’t here right now.” The woman paused. “Did you have reason to think she would be? Have you tried to reach her at home?”

“We talked with her husband. He’s the one who said she was with you. I’d have called her cellphone, but apparently, she left it behind when she left.”

Mrs. Jade chuckled. “Well, yes, she was bad about that.”

Something about that chuckle made me think the woman was fully up to date on her daughter’s wanton ways. And more than that. It made me think that she fully supported her in those ways. What kind of family were we dealing with here?

“I’m guessing you knew about Glenda and John Parsons?” I held my breath. It might have been a small leap of faith on my part, but it was a leap none the less.

Another chuckle. “Oh yes.
